Aron Kroes
Aron Kroes (born 1987, Netherlands) is a Dutch painter whose work occupies the charged territory between figuration and abstraction — a space defined by intuition, emotional directness, and an uncompromising commitment to the act of painting itself.
Kroes works without external references. Each canvas begins not from a photograph or sketch, but from within — from the emotions, experiences, and sensations present at the precise moment of creation. This intuitive methodology is not a stylistic choice but a fundamental conviction: that authentic expression cannot be planned, only followed.
His portraits maintain a clear connection to the foundations of figurative painting while pushing consistently against its boundaries. Abstraction enters not as decoration but as necessity — as the most honest way to render what is felt rather than merely what is seen.
Light is a defining preoccupation in Kroes's practice. Through the use of metallic and chrome hues — synthetic spray paint colours drawn from the tradition of graffiti and street art — he actively engages with reflection and luminosity, bringing a contemporary urban energy into dialogue with the classical language of portraiture.
Kroes is one of the most actively exhibited Dutch painters of his generation, with a significant international presence across Europe and the United States.
