Rep Ringel
Rep Ringel is a Dutch multidisciplinary artist whose practice exists at the intersection of sound, abstraction, and material innovation. Born into a family where creativity was both currency and language — his mother a graduated fashion designer, his father a poet — Ringel grew up in an environment where artistic exploration was not merely encouraged, but expected.
Before establishing his visual art practice, Ringel built a career defined by an acute sensitivity to aesthetics and culture. His passion for music led him to work as a DJ, developing an intimate understanding of rhythm, texture, and the emotional architecture of sound. This deep connection to music would become the very foundation of everything that followed. He later founded Ringel Design, an award-winning graphic design agency specialising in fashion, beauty, and cosmetics — sectors where visual language is everything.
Ringel's fine art practice is built on a singular and compelling concept: every painting is born from a single piece of music. Each work begins with the selection of one specific track or composition, played on continuous loop throughout the entire creation process. As the music plays, he translates its layers — its tension, release, silence, and crescendo — directly onto the canvas through large-scale abstract works in acrylic. The result is not an illustration of sound, but a visceral visual interpretation of it. A painting you can almost hear.
His colour palette has evolved organically over time, moving from the warmth of earth tones into the full spectrum of the natural elements. Water appears in cool, expansive blues and whites. Fire emerges in fierce oranges and reds. Air lives in the lightness and movement across the canvas. Touches of metallic pigment and pure 24-karat gold are frequently introduced, elevating each piece beyond the purely visual.
Each painting is named after the track or artist that gave it life — authenticity embedded from the very first mark.
To ensure the integrity and provenance of each work, Ringel incorporates a custom wax seal into the lower left corner of every canvas. Within this seal sits an NFC chip containing a link to the musical inspiration, key artwork information, and a certificate of authenticity recorded on the blockchain — a seamless union of artisanal tradition and cutting-edge technology.
Beyond painting, Ringel's practice encompasses two further bodies of work. His Silence and Silence Gold photography series captures intimate details from within his canvases — fragments that, divorced from their painted context, take on an entirely new life. Each photograph represents a single note within the larger composition, presented as strictly limited editions in two distinct formats.
His MUDA series transforms the large sheets of cardboard used as mixing palettes during the painting process into meticulously handcrafted three-dimensional collages. A precise fold is introduced into each strip, along which a fine line of 24-karat gold is applied — turning what was discarded into something precious. The name MUDA references the concept of industrial waste and overproduction, embedding a quiet critique within each work. What the world discards, art can redeem.
